Very thoughtful post - thanks Eric. Sadly many of the fabled "end of empire" narratives seem to be playing out in the US right now (not that the EU is any better). What the global economy seems to be sadly lacking is cohesive, constructive and long-term, future-focused (as you point out), leadership. Instead, what we currently have in the US and EU , is heavily divisive, self-interested, short-termism that won't generate the policy options, nor the confidence, that a flagging global economy desperately needs. Let's hope that Obama's call for jobs brings a unity of purpose back to US politics and that the EU can start think and act together to create a more sustainabale future.
